At Easterns Automotive Group, we believe in the power of community, and our latest Helping Hands with 7News DC, we were able to surprise the Crimson Heat All Stars. This Maryland-based nonprofit is dedicated to providing physical fitness, social development, leadership, and academic excellence to youth aged 4 to 18 throughout the DMV area, with the primary goal of making competitive cheerleading more accessible for the youth of Washington, D.C.

Coach Veronica Burton, a dedicated advocate for youth development, has been giving back for an impressive 24 years. For Burton, it’s not just about cheerleading; it’s about instilling life lessons that extend beyond the field. Whether mastering stunts or perfecting dance routines, Burton takes pride in the personal growth and achievements of her young athletes.

“Cheerleading is our tool, and it’s the instrument that we use to transform lives,” Burton expressed passionately. “Here we are 24 years later – working with kids and trying to be phenomenal people. It was important for us to give them a competitive athletic experience but using that as a tool to shape their future growth.”

Inside what they fondly refer to as the “fire house” at the Capitol Heights gym, the Crimson Heat All Stars train each afternoon. Their full-year program consists of six months of intensive training and another six months dedicated to competing. What makes this program truly special is that all the coaches are volunteers who have emerged from the very program they now support.

Recently, Easterns Automotive Group had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with 7News to surprise the Crimson Heat All Stars with a 7News Helping Hand. The financial support provided by Easterns Automotive Group aims to contribute to the children’s training space, travel opportunities, and the wonderful experiences that shape their growth.

“Every penny counts! These dollars help these children have a great space to train and be able to travel and do the wonderful things that they do – we are so grateful. Wow, thank you!” expressed Coach Veronica Burton with heartfelt gratitude.

At Easterns Automotive Group, we’re honored to stand alongside organizations like the Crimson Heat All Stars, dedicated to molding future leaders and fostering positive growth within our community. As we continue to give back, we look forward to supporting even more initiatives that make a lasting difference in the lives of our youth.

Easterns Automotive Group has partnered with 7 News on this Helping Hands to support Leveling the Playing, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing sports equipment to students in the DMV.

Max Levitt, the founder of Leveling the Playing Field, has been helping P.E. Teachers across the region with sports equipment to ensure that no child is left out for ten years now. He expressed his passion for this cause, stating, “So many kids out there are not being given that opportunity. It is given so much to so many people, and the fact that socioeconomics plays a role in something that I think every kid should have the experience with.”

Max Levitt, highlighted the impact of removing financial barriers for families. “We have had many programs where we have seen participation increase specifically because the cost of equipment was removed as a barrier for families that just would have said no way,” said Levitt. “They get the lacrosse and they don’t have to spend $3,000 we are going to provide that for you, it’s more doable for families.”

Roger Garris, an athletics employee at Walker Mill Middle School in Prince George’s County, Md., emphasized the need for sports equipment in schools. “With most schools – you have kids that cannot afford things so Leveling the Playing Field helps them out with cleats and socks,” said Garris. “All of the things parents can’t afford.” Donation bins placed strategically across the region are making it easy for communities to get involved and provide students with the chance to experience the positive impact of sports.

By supporting Leveling the Playing Field, Easterns Automotive Group aims to champion the idea that every child deserves the chance to play, learn, and grow through the transformative power of sports.

Helping Hands: STATDC https://www.easterns.com/2023/12/26/helping-hands-statdc/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 15:48:10 +0000 https://www.easterns.com/?p=128785 Easterns has partnered with ABC 7 News to support STATDC and burn victim Dominic Walker's recovery journey. With a surprise #HelpingHand, we're positively impacting the community, ensuring no one goes hungry during challenging times. 💙

In a small corner of Prince William County, a resilient family faced a life-altering moment earlier this year when a gas explosion engulfed their home, leaving one member severely burned. Dominic Walker, a burn victim, vividly recalls the harrowing incident that nearly claimed the lives of his family, including his 5-year-old daughter.

As Walker undergoes the arduous process of recovery, a local organization named STATDC has emerged as a beacon of support, working tirelessly to provide him with essential assistance during this challenging time.

Walker reflects on the traumatic event, stating, “He lit a candle and the whole house went up in flames. In that moment, I thought my daughter was outside with her mother, but she wasn’t, so I had to smash the window to get out and then go back inside to get my daughter.” His recounting of the incident is a testament to the strength and determination that has characterized his journey towards healing.

In the aftermath of the explosion, Walker spent three weeks in a coma, battling severe burns and uncertainty about his ability to walk and talk again. “I have pain in my hands, so every day it’s like, ‘When is this going to be over?'” he shares, shedding light on the physical and emotional toll of his recovery. Relearning basic tasks, such as showering, holding utensils, and eating, has become a daily struggle for him.

Recognizing the pressing need within the community, Tanya Whitaker, founder of STATDC, a local nonprofit focused on eradicating food insecurity and promoting labor-market fairness, stepped in to provide assistance. Whitaker, driven by a personal understanding of the struggles that accompany hardship, emphasizes, “There is a real need in the community.”

When asked to assist Walker during his time of need, Whitaker didn’t hesitate. “All I did was get a phone call and said, ‘Can you give someone food?’ I didn’t need to know the back story, nothing,” she explained. For Whitaker, the work of nonprofits like STATDC is deeply rooted in personal experiences. “If people were honest, most nonprofits are birthed out of pain. I have been hungry before, and no one should have to feel like that.”

In a heartwarming turn of events, 7News and Joel Bassam from Easterns Automotive Group surprised STATDC with a generous Helping Hand donation of $2,200. The unexpected contribution will significantly impact the organization’s ability to provide food to those in need.

“That means more people can eat. This is amazing, and this is an answer. I was just coming to give food,” expressed Whitaker in complete surprise and gratitude.

By extending a Helping Hand, they have not only contributed to feeding those in need but have also become a symbol of hope and solidarity during challenging times. Together, they exemplify the power of compassion and community support in fostering recovery and resilience.

At Easterns Automotive Group, we believe in making a positive impact on the communities we serve. One initiative that has captured our hearts is Blessings in a Backpack, a mission dedicated to ensuring no student in Fairfax County goes hungry over the weekends.

Every week, a group of dedicated volunteers assembles at Mount Vernon Community School to pack small bags filled with essential food items. These bags serve as a lifeline for students facing food insecurity, providing them with nutritional support during the weekends.

Rebecca King, a teacher at Mount Vernon Community School, has witnessed the impact firsthand. She shared, “I have got to see the joy on students’ faces when on Fridays they get a little bit something extra to take home on the weekends for nutritional support that they need.”

Blessings in a Backpack started with a modest goal of supporting 40 children but has now expanded to over a hundred students. This year, they took a step further by including fresh fruit in the snack bags.

Easterns Automotive Group, through our Helping Hands initiative, was thrilled to surprise Blessings in a Backpack with support to continue their incredible work benefiting children in the community. Joel Bassam expressed, “It is great to see the kids on Friday look and see what is in their bag, and it brings a lot of joy to the students when they see you are providing a lot of support for them and their families.”

We are proud to stand alongside Blessings in a Backpack, reinforcing our commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

At Eastern Motors, we believe in the power of community and the importance of supporting organizations that make a difference. One such organization that has been doing remarkable work in Washington, D.C. for the past two decades is the Brem Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and improving the lives of those affected.

For Rachel Brem, the founder of the Brem Foundation, the mission to advocate for breast cancer awareness began at the tender age of 12. Her determination was fueled by a personal tragedy – her mother’s diagnosis with breast cancer at the age of 33, with a prognosis of just six months to live. Against the odds, her mother’s resilience allowed her to live for 44 years.

Rachel Brem’s personal encounter with breast cancer occurred while she was working as a director of breast imaging in the 1980s. In a twist of fate, she diagnosed herself while testing ultrasound equipment one evening.

This life-changing experience led her to establish the Brem Foundation, driven by the conviction that early detection and quality treatment could save lives. The foundation’s core principles revolve around education, access, and advocacy. They work diligently to ensure that women in underserved communities throughout D.C. have the necessary support and resources.

In Washington, D.C., a city with the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the country, the Brem Foundation strives to break down access barriers and provide free rides for women to attend critical appointments. Their work is a testament to their commitment to ensuring that no woman must choose between healthcare and basic necessities like food or rent.

Recently, 7News and Joel Bassam from Easterns Automotive Group joined hands to support the Brem Foundation. In the form of a $2,200 donation, this Helping Hands will enable the foundation to extend its services for early detection, ultimately saving women’s lives. The surprise donation exemplifies the Eastern Motors commitment to uplifting the community and fostering positive change.

At Eastern Motors, we stand by the Brem Foundation and its unwavering dedication to breast cancer awareness. Together, we believe in the strength of community support to make a difference in the lives of women affected by this disease.

As we dive into the new school year, Easterns Automotive Group teamed up with 7News to make a remarkable impact on the local community. This time, we set our sights on Allenwood Elementary School in Prince George’s County. With the educational landscape evolving rapidly, access to digital resources has become crucial for students. Recognizing this need, we decided to surprise Allenwood Elementary School with a generous donation of much-needed laptops through the 7News Helping Hands initiative.

Principal Shawna Fagbuyi couldn’t stress enough how critical these laptops are for the success of their students. In today’s world, learning extends beyond the classroom, and these laptops will serve as a gateway to a wealth of knowledge. Whether used within the classroom or at home, they offer invaluable tools for both students and their families.

“These laptops will be phenomenal for our students. We have opportunities for them to engage in interventions at home; we use computers inside the classroom; so this will really give our students an opportunity to have their own devices at home that do not belong to the school and that they can share with their families,” Fagbuyi expressed.

The surprise didn’t just leave the students excited; it left them nearly speechless. Known for their spirited Wildcats mascot, the students showed their enthusiasm with an impressive roar. However, when the laptops were unveiled, the room was filled with awe and appreciation.

With the school year officially underway, these laptops are set to become indispensable tools for Allenwood Elementary School students. At Easterns Automotive Group, we’re committed to empowering our local communities and helping students access the resources they need to thrive in the digital age of learning. Education is the key to a brighter future, and we’re proud to support the educational journey of these young minds.

As the back-to-school season approaches, the anticipation of academic achievement is coupled with the concern of meeting the financial demands that come with it. Families often find themselves grappling with the costs of school supplies, clothing, and other essentials that set their children up for success.

In Fairfax County, a beacon of hope shines through – the KOINONIA Cares Organization. This local nonprofit, which traces its roots back to the 1960s, is dedicated to supporting families in need throughout the year. Judy Davis, the executive director of KOINONIA, shared that their doors are open to around 40 families on a regular basis. Beyond offering essential food and clothing items, KOINONIA extends a helping hand that touches the lives of thousands of community members.

The name KOINONIA, meaning “sharing,” reflects the organization’s core principle – to share resources, kindness, and support with those who need it the most. One such family, represented by Angie, a mother of two young children, expressed deep gratitude for KOINONIA’s assistance. “My family is very happy because they help with food and clothing,” she shared.
